How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?

Under pressures of approximately 5–6 GPa and temperatures of 1,300–1,600°C, carbon atoms crystallise onto the seed. 2. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
In the CVD method, a thin diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gases (mainly methane and hydrogen). Microwaves create a plasma that breaks down the gases, allowing carbon atoms to deposit layer by layer onto the seed. Growth occurs at lower temperatures (around 700–1,300°C) and usually takes several weeks.
Both methods can produce high-quality colourless or fancy-coloured diamonds that are visually identical to natural diamonds.
How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Identified?
Because lab-grown diamonds have the same basic physical and optical properties as natural diamonds, they cannot be reliably distinguished by the naked eye. Professional gemological equipment is required for accurate identification.
Common identification methods include:
- Examination of growth patterns and internal features
- Ultraviolet fluorescence and phosphorescence responses (including DiamondView imaging)
- Infrared spectroscopy to analyse nitrogen and boron impurities
- Photoluminescence spectroscopy
- Magnetic testing (some HPHT diamonds may show magnetic properties due to metallic inclusions)
